Hi, Can anyone tell me if there is a fire code that prohibits attaching anything to a fire sprinkler pipe. If there is, what is it or where can I find it.
As referenced by the Statewide Fire Prevention Code, NFPA 25, Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, '98 Edition, Section 2-2.2 states in part, "Sprinkler piping shall not be subjected to external loads by materials either resting on the pipe or hung from the pipe." This is language often used to prevent anything...any material...at any time...from being attached or connected to the piping other those materials or components installed with the system such as, pipe, hangers, elbows, sprinkler heads, valves, gauges, bracing, etc.
A common problem I have found and one that should not be overlooked is flexible ductwork resting on sprinkler piping. Really, this includes any services, but I have found flexible ductwork, especially in apartment construction to be a big problem. I agree with GDean, nothing shall rest or be supported by the sprinkler piping. Gary
Mike, generally I would say "no", it would not apply if the standard-compliant sprinkler design allowed for it. Much of the other stuff found out there that is attached after installation, such as banners, drop ceilings, hanging baskets, lighting fixtures, decorations, etc. is the concern. They may place undo loads on the piping and hangers and may further contribute as obstructions to the spray pattern.
I believe that NFPA 13 prohibits supporting sprinkler piping on other sprinkler piping. Section 6-2.1.3 clearly states that sprinkler piping shall be substantially supported from the building structure. There are no exceptions.
