Testing of Private Hydrants

Does anyone out there test private hydrants? If so do you have a release the owner must sign before testing is performed. Any information is appreciated. SNM

Shawn,

Under new construction, our County treats the private loop system as part of the overall fire protection of the building. We require a separate permit, inspections, performance tests, and supervision for the NFPA 24 system. This is simply part of the process of gaining a final building inspection for their CO.

Existing systems I believe is another story. I believe AHJs have the right to see that the equipment is being maintained per NFPA 25 via third party annual inspections. I personally would not want to be responsible for testing private systems. This opens up to much liability and creates more work for smaller departments that are already stretched too thin as it is.

See IFC 508.5.3.

Hope this helps,
Gary
