Remote Fire Pump Monitoring

If a fire pump and tank are located over 900' from the building in which it is providing flow and pressure, does it need to be tied into the building fire alarm system? Or, can a remote monitoring system be installed with an anunnciator panel installed in the building? A third option, can a totally separate fire alarm system, monitored off sight, be installed just for the fire pump house? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Gary, Why no takers for your questions??? I assume the building has a fire alarm system installed. and an automatic sprinkler system. If assumptions are true then a water flow in the sprinklers has to initiate an alarm in the building. HOw they acomplish that is up to them? I suspect the alarm device is in the builing that it serves.

The monitoring of the fire pump and the tank is also required in NFPA 20. Both the FA and fire pump monitoring systems are required to be supervised. and which ultimately will communicate with the owner. Sounds like all three methods you suggested would accomplish code compliance.

smileKayLynn,

They ended up putting a three sprinkler system in the non-combustible fire pump house, which wasn't required but forced them into putting a flow switch and fire alarm panel in the pump house. A rather expensive alternative considering now they have 4 dedicated phones, two accounts, two panels, etc. All this for a fire pump house with three sprinkler heads, one flow switch, one manual pull and one smoke detector and of course the monitoring of the fire pump and tampers.

The other issue we had was the fire pump supplies the private fire loop which the company uses occassionally for maintenance purposes. So when the private fire hydrants are used the fire pump runs sending an alarm signal to the Central Station. We allowed them to program the fire pump run to a supervisory signal and rely on the flow switches for the alarm conditions.

Thanks for your feedback. I have been doing my part to get this Q&A board more active, but so far it hasn't worked.

Gary

The fire alarm system is a system to control the fire before it around the building and to control the spread of smoke fumes automatically and also in manual.  For more information visit:heat protection
